Is It “Real”? Letting Consumers Authenticate Your Brand

As the world faces a huge gray market issue, particularly in the realm of luxury products, like handbags, shoes, and makeup, brand authentication is becoming increasingly important for combatting fraud. Connected packaging allows consumers to authenticate your brand and products in new, exciting ways.

Connected packaging enables consumers to authenticate your brand

Invisible conductive ink ensures product quality and protects your brand. Individual products can be given a unique code, and companies can build internal apps or mobile websites that integrate with that code to allow consumers and retailers alike to verify product quality and authenticity.

Luxury handbags, which tend to be popular items to counterfeit, usually include an interior tag that’s relatively easy to duplicate. However, if the tag includes an identification code, customers and retailers can confirm authenticity, without counterfeiters having any idea.

Hangtags on clothing or special edition sneakers could be printed with invisible conductive ink to avoid counterfeiting, and a neck tag over the neck of a high-end bottle of spirits or liquor is another way to authenticate a luxury product.

With the proliferation of counterfeit goods being sold online, authenticating a product within its packaging is also an effective option.

Smashbox Cosmetics added cards to its eyeshadow packaging that were printed with Touchcode’s invisible conductive ink. Customers could touch their mobile devices to the card, launch a mobile website, and unlock exclusive content: video tutorials with professional makeup artists. An added bonus was that including a card printed with Touchcode within the makeup package also served to authenticate the product, even though that wasn’t the primary objective.

In another case, following a Burberry fashion show, attendees who purchased clothing items featured in the snow received customized cards embedded with an invisible code that granted them access to exclusive background information about their clothing and also served to authenticate each piece.

Adding invisible conductive ink to product tags and packaging allows consumers to launch exclusive digital content when they touch their mobile devices to the code, and that same process allows products to be digitally authenticated. When tags and packaging are uniquely identifiable, they’re impossible to counterfeit. Customers and retailers can instantly verify authenticity with the touch of a mobile device.

Connected packaging helps retailers verify product quality and authenticity

In addition to enhancing the customer experience with exclusive content, connected packaging makes it possible to follow authenticated products across distribution channels. Creating unique codes for single products allows those codes to be used to verify a product’s authenticity and location. Touchcode’s specialized conductive ink formulation, printing processes, and software packaging are hard to reproduce, and our software development kit can tell whether a product is real or fake.

MAC Cosmetics used an embedded Touchcode pattern to authenticate products received through various distribution channels. The code was placed inside MAC’s black makeup boxes, and MAC shipping and receiving employees could use an internal sensor to confirm the product’s authenticity.

Connected packaging makes brand authentication easier and counterfeiting harder

Adding connected packaging to any product helps consumers authenticate brands and helps brands combat counterfeiting. Connected packaging technology allows smartphone users around the world to authenticate products via their mobile devices. Connected packaging makes it possible to validate product integrity, which prevents fraud and protects your brand.
